5 Signs that you need a new AC – Part 1

History of Air Conditioning

Prior to the 1800s, the main way people who felt overheated used their hands or small fans to cool themselves off. Living in a hotter climate than most of the country, a Florida doctor, Dr. John Gorrie, built a machine that made ice. This blew air over it, cooling an entire room in the 1830s. He patented the idea in 1851, but the machine was not mass produced. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that Willis Carrier invented the Apparatus for Treating Air. He did this for a publishing company in New York that the first model of modern air conditioners were made.

His appliance blew air over cold coils, controlling room temperature and humidity to protect the pages of his client’s books. The machine’s success grew and Carrier established the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America in 1902, It is still one of today’s leading air conditioning company in the air conditioning industry.

Since then, groundbreaking innovations have been made to the first design. The goal of aiding in human comfort, not preserving industrial goods. In 1931 H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman invented an individual air conditioner that sits on a window ledge.
